Overview

We will get an overview of the benefits, methods and applications of mindfulness. Chris will teach some simple practices that participants can begin to incorporate into their lives that can be helpful in deepening into and making peace with the present moment. This session will encourage each of us to take the time to quiet our minds so that we can tap into our vast inner wisdom and support. When we can have this internal awareness, we become more available to ourselves, our relationships, our purpose and our world.

Chris Adams, MD practiced family and integrative medicine for many years in Seattle. She currently practices counseling, consultation and mind body medicine, and works extensively with people and families with cancer as a facilitator at Harmony Hill, a cancer retreat center on the Hood Canal. Chris is on the faculty at the University of Washington and teaches the Mind Body Medicine and Healer’s Art classes. She is also a long time meditation and tai chi practitioner, and is currently an apprentice tai chi teacher with the Seattle Tai Chi Foundation. Love of gardening, the natural world, literature, poetry, family, friends and cultivating awareness and kindness are what sustain her.

She has worked as an OncologyService Line Dietitian at CHI Franciscan Health and managed all Community Cancer Programs for CHI Franciscan over 16 years. Currently, she is an Oncology Program Manager for Providence Strategic Program Services, working to build effective cancer programming for 50 hospitals throughout the western US.

Tricia loves to share the powerful message about the role of food and lifestyle in reducing both cancer risk and cancer recurrence risk. How we eat and manage our day-to-day lives has a significant impact on life after cancer.

Dr. Sally Johnson is a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. She is board certified in Family Medicine.
She received her medical degree at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey- School of Osteopathic Medicine (now called Rowan University).

She completed her residency in Family Medicine at Northwestern University – Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois with a special focus on integrative Medicine and Osteopathic Manipulation.

She has extensive training in Osteopathic Medicine, Cranial Osteopathy, Integrative Medicine, Functional Medicine and Medical Acupuncture.

She received her training in Medical Acupuncture at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA with Dr. Joseph Helms. She trained in Botanical and Herbal Preparations at the University of Arizona Program in Integrative Medicine and has addition training in Cranial Osteopathy form the Cranial Academy. She also had training in Functional Medicine and Anti-Aging Medicine from Institute of Functional Medicine and American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine.

During her premedical studies, she worked as a research coordinator at Columbia University in Complementary Medicine with Dr. Memet Oz (the Dr. Oz on TV). She also worked in the Department of Anesthesia with Dr. Richard Smiley where she researched many aspects of pain management for Obstetrics and Gynecology.

sibel_blauDr. Blau has been in clinical private practice since 2001 where she has taken roles as a leader in developing a breast cancer program of excellence, establishing multi-disciplinary clinics, participating in research advisory boards in national organizations including Cancer Clinics of Excellence and Catholic Health Initiatives, heading the personalized clinical oncology research track at Northwest Medical Specialties and being the Medical Director of the Rainier Hematology Oncology division. She has also participated in community oncology research in the Sound region of the state of Washington and has been one of the highest recruiters to the studies at the state level many years in a row. She also played a major role in Northwest Medical Specialties’ receipt of the ASCO award for community oncology research in 2012. As a busy clinician, Dr. Blau has focused on developing a clinical program and advancing their research program. She has been involved in the development of The Center for Cancer Innovation since its inception. Dr. Blau was involved in writing and implementing a unique feasibility clinical trial for intense omic testing and data collection of advanced triple negative breast cancer patients under the Center for Cancer Innovation, and has been a Principal Investigator and Sub Investigator on over 100 clinical trials.

Since then, she has continued her education at Antioch University Seattle and will be graduating at the end of the month with a doctorate degree in Clinical Health Psychology. Tara has worked with a variety of populations who present with various mental health concerns. Over the past year, she has been completing her internship year at Pacific Rehabilitation Centers helping patients manage chronic pain. During her internship year she has also worked with patients at the Jane Thompson Russell Cancer Center located at St. Anthony Hospital. Tara plans to continue her career in health psychology working in primary care settings with the intent to help more patients better understand the mind-body connection.

A gentle, compassionate sequence focused on balance and flushing out toxins. A simple sequence will be taught that can be practiced at home by a beginner or advanced student of yoga. This session will focus on lymphatic drainage, core strength, and overall healing. You will leave the session with a how-to guide for practicing this balancing sequence and how it can be tailored to suit your individual needs.

Note: A perfect class for those suffering from knee issues, back pain, difficult getting down and up from the floor, limited energy while standing, etc.

She became a Yoga Shiromani (Certified Hatha Yoga Instructor) in 2004, under the tutelage of her master teacher Shri Yoga Hari, whose  deep, simple and practical approach intelligently integrates Hatha, Raja, Karma, Bhakti, Jnana and Nada Yoga. Zoe later attained her Advanced Yoga Certification from Yoga Niketan Ashram in Rishikesh, India in 2007.

While working in Lesotho, Southern Africa with home-based caregivers, cancer patients and survivors, and people with HIV/AIDS, Zoe wrote an instructional book on Yoga with sections focused on insomnia, stress, healing and rejuvenation for people affected by cancer, HIV/AIDS and their caregivers. Today, Zoe works with private clients and groups building personalized Yoga programs, employing classical Hatha Yoga styles that include Vinyasa/flow, Iyengar, Restorative, Sivananda, and Yin Yoga to help create healing yoga practices. She teaches Yoga at the Jane Thompson Russell Cancer Care Center in Gig Harbor, and is co-owner of Harbor Massage & Ayurveda.

Zoe also holds certification as an Ayurveda Health Practitioner from the California College of Ayurveda. She studied with Dr. Marc Halpern, a recognized Ayurvedacharya awarded the All India Award for Best Ayurvedic Physician.

To enrich the unique needs of an individual’s practice and reach the ultimate goal of a life in balance, Zoe infuses her Yoga with Ayurvedic wisdom, and provides food choices, food preparation, and lifestyle suggestions to facilitate optimal health for individual clients and groups.

Overview

Caring for a loved one can be very rewarding, but it also involves many stressors due to changes in the family dynamic, household disruption, financial pressure, and the added workload. Caregiver stress is the emotional and physical strain of caregiving; and when caregiver stress puts your own health at risk, it affects your ability to provide care and can negatively impact both you and the person you’re caring for. Information presented will provide caregivers with ways to recognize some of the signs and symptoms of caregiver stress, and offer strategies for coping.

Presenter Bio

beth_2015_02_15-165x300Beth Zier M.A., L.M.H.C.A., grew up in North Dakota and moved to Washington state to attend Pacific Lutheran University (PLU). She graduated from PLU in 1979 with a B.A. in education and a minor in Coaching and Health. She formerly taught and coached in both N.D. and Washington.

Beth has been married to her husband Mark, since September, 1985. They have two sons in their twenties. After being a stay-at-home mom for many years, Beth earned her Master’s degree in Counseling. Presently she has a private practice for counseling with women, through which she is “Offering HOPE for the Journey”. Her counseling office is located in downtown Puyallup, Washington.

Beth is a two-time survivor. She survived a near-fatal car accident in January, 1980 after having been given less than a 5% chance to live. She also survived breast cancer following her diagnosis in 2002. Through those experiences Beth has gained some insight on living life in the the face of unexpected challenges.

A panel of prostate cancer survivors will present their stories including treatment of side effects following initial treatment. Also included will be the story of a caregiver.

Bob Freeborn

Bob Freeborn has been actively involved with several prostate cancer support groups since 2004. He was diagnosed with early stage prostate cancer in May 2004 and underwent a radical prostatectomy in July 2004. He started attending a support group immediately after treatment and recognized the value of this group to post treatment men as well as to those men who were newly diagnosed and seeking information on various treatment forms. Bob initiated and facilitated a support group closer to home the following year and this group eventually merged with the Tacoma Prostate Cancer Support Group (TPCSG) in 2007. He is a member of the TPCSG steering committee and is a co-facilitator for the group. Bob is a 22 year Air Force veteran, flying a variety of aircraft throughout his career and then spent 16 years in commercial aviation, retiring in 2006. Bob holds a bachelor’s degree fro m Michigan State University in Police Administration and an MBA from Regis University.

She has studied with Egyptian masters and has received national recognition for excellence in Middle Eastern dance. For many years, she performed regularly throughout Seattle clubs and restaurants, sometimes logging in over 200 performances a year. In July 2014, she was diagnosed with stage III breast cancer. Thanks in no small part to a loving and supportive dance community, she is now cancer-free and has returned to dancing. She believes in the power of dance to provide strength and happiness, no matter where our journeys lead. Her experience has deepened her commitment to teach with compassion, purpose, and most of all, joy.

Betty is a Registered Dietitian, working primarily with Good Samaritan Hospital oncology patients for over 10 years. She has been guest speaker at multiple cancer support groups, including last years PCCSC, supporting healthy eating as her primary focus. Betty presented Power of Nutrition series of classes giving practical advice, healthy recipes and sharing food with attendees.

Overview

I will discuss about the class how it is designed for any fitness level, talk about the benefits of each segment of the class, aerobic–weather permitting we will take a walk outside, light weights for arms, core work, and stretching, ending the class with a few minutes to relax. The class idea is to get people started with some physical fitness and allow opportunities for friendship and support. It is available for family members, friends and caregivers as well.

We will do a few stretches for participants to try.

Note:  This class is offered on Tuesday at 10AM at the Dr. Richard C. Ostenson Cancer Center in Puyallup.

He co-authored the book “How to Prevent and Treat Cancer With Natural Medicine, and wrote the chapter on oncology care for “The Textbook of Natural Medicine”. Dr Reilly was formerly the National Director of Naturopathic Medicine for Cancer Treatment Centers of America and now works at Salish Cancer Center in Fife He fully believes that patients can most successfully treat cancer and stay cancer free when they utilize the best tools from conventional care paired with natural therapies. “When we identify and correct drivers of cancer, we improve outcomes. Many cancer survivors are concerned about what their diagnosis may mean for their children. Although cancer does not typically run in families, there are well known inherited cancer syndromes that may increase the risk for cancer in your loved ones. Learn how your family history may provide clues to an underlying inherited cancer syndrome and what you can do to reduce the risk of cancer in your relatives.

What About My Kinds?Dana Knutzen provides genetic counseling services through the Franciscan Clinical Cancer Genetics Program at St. Joseph Medical Center, where she evaluates individuals and families affected by cancer to determine if their cancer may be inherited. Her past clinical experience includes pediatric genetic counseling with Seattle Children’s Hospital and prenatal genetic counseling for active duty service members and their dependents at Madigan Army Medical Center. She received her Master of Science degree in Genetic Counseling from the University of Michigan in 2002 and her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology Education from Central Washington University in 1997.

Ms. Bean will give an easy-to-understand overview of estate and long-term care planning. She will go over the most important estate planning documents everyone needs and will also discuss the importance of Wills and Durable Powers of Attorney. She has been doing personal training at Lakewood and Morgan Family YMCA’s in Tacoma since 2006. She teaches Gentle and Mixed level yoga as well as various other classes at the Lakewood YMCA and the MultiCare employee wellness program. She is also a TRX Group and Sports Medicine Instructor and has worked with cancer survivors through the Livestrong at the YMCA program in Lakewood.

Formerly in primary care, she has worked in the area of cancer survivorship since 2012 at Fred Hutch and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. Betty is a Registered Dietitian, working primarily with Good Samaritan Hospital oncology patients for over 10 years. She has been guest speaker at multiple cancer support groups, including last years PCCSC, supporting healthy eating as her primary focus. Betty presented Power of Nutrition series of classes giving practical advice, healthy recipes and sharing food with attendees.

dscf0140J. Fields is a psychotherapist and Tai Chi instructor. For the past 14 years he has been a facilitator of Cancer Groups at Harmony Hill Retreat Center. His own experience with Bladder cancer occurred in 2003 and he was a companion to his father on his journey in 2008. He has worked extensively with Trauma, including returning combat Veterans, domestic violence and child abuse.

Dr. Brand received his BS in engineering and MD at Tulane University.

He trained in urological surgery at Tripler Army Medical Center. He then completed a urological oncology fellowship and MS in clinical investigation at University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas. He has been stationed at Madigan Army Medical Center since then, and is the residency director for the urology program there. His research interests include prostate cancer and robotic simulation research.

 

 

Overview

Young adults diagnosed with cancer face many issues unique to their age, including the potential for infertility. Rose has faced cancer twice in her young life and was told each time that cancer treatment would likely leave her sterile. She is not a fertility expert by profession, but has made it her mission to learn as much as she can about cancer’s impact on fertility. Today, Rose will share her experiences trying to preserve her fertility, having a child after cancer and facing the many mysteries of cancer and fertility. She will also share the research she has accumulated on this topic including the options and resources available to young adults diagnosed with cancer.

12633727_1095461867154320_454903778136398404_o-300x200Rose Ibarra was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 2011 at age 25 and relapsed in 2015. She is currently in remission after undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatments as well as a stem cell transplant. After her initial diagnosis Rose started the non-profit Thrive Through Cancer to support young adults fighting cancer in the Pacific Northwest. She also works at Seattle Children’s, writing about medical research, including recent cancer immunotherapy treatments. Rose lives in Seattle with her husband, her 15-month-old son and two cats.
