Sunday, June 6th will mark the 34th annual National Cancer Survivors Day. Held on the first Sunday of June every year, it is a day of celebration, recognition, advocacy, and connection for cancer survivors and their family, friends, caregivers, and communities.
It gives us a moment to reflect on what it means to be a cancer survivor. It gives us an opportunity to honor those living with a history of cancer, and to celebrate their strength, courage, and resilience. It allows us to acknowledge the contributions of all the care providers, all the friends and family members, and all the researchers and people striving to raise awareness and advocate for our community.
It’s not the same thing as World Cancer Day, which is February 4th every year. As far as we’re concerned, the more the merrier when it comes to raising awareness for cancer and cancer survivorship.
We at Cancer Survivorship NW—both as an organization and as individuals whose lives have been touched by cancer—support any cause that brings survivors together and calls attention to our needs, our strengths, and our dignity.
So we’d like to ask you personally: what will YOU do on June 6th to celebrate National Cancer Survivors Day? Take a moment to reflect on this. (Don’t have time right now? Put ten minutes in your calendar right now, and schedule yourself a reminder. Go ahead. We’ll wait.)
- Will you post a story to Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram?
- Will you go for a hike, stretch out in a hammock, or hug a loved one?
- Will you donate money to a research organization or charity?
- Will you register for one of the events that we’ve organized?
- Will you host your own survivorship event? (let us know!)
- Or have you thought of some other way to celebrate the day?
