After five years as a Holistic Health Coach, Lauren was betrayed by her super healthy lifestyle and diagnosed with two back-to-back aggressive cancers, Mantle Cell Lymphoma and Triple Negative Breast Cancer. Fear was a constant companion through the four year journey back to health. In her address, Laren will share her inspiring story and the tools she developed in mind, body, and spirit to keep fear at bay and live her life with strength and optimism.

Evidence suggests that eating a diet rich in a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans, low in red meat and very little processed meat can help curb cancer at several stages. Along with an active lifestyle, the food you eat can be one of the most powerful daily choices you can make to decrease your risk of cancer recurrence while achieving a healthy weight. Nancy will also include the latest research on the gut microbiome, and its impact on immunity and inflammation.

Overview

Each person’s journey is uniquely personal, and a unique confluence of joy and pain. With the motion of those waters, the emotion they bring, and the history that has brought each person to this place in our lives, we may find ourselves in one current or another, or one pool or another, as the waters move. Within those waters, there are times (to borrow from ancient wisdom), times for adjustment and times for resolve, a time for tears and a time for joy, a time for grief and a time for celebration. It is a discussion of the value of the life that is.

Overview

Hearing “You have got Cancer” makes everyone feel like the Bell has just rung on their last lap. It may not be the last but it feels like it! UNCERTAINTY starts to color every day, thought , dream & relationship. Whatever its length this lap can be run well once it is understood, planned and fully engaged. And if it is long or extra laps are added they will all be better for having started running at the sound of the Bell.

Beating cancer takes more than good luck and a good doctor, a high-tech medical center and exotic drugs. It takes a savvy patient capable of enduring the unexpected and making critical decisions under stress. But every patient is caught off guard: few are acquainted with the foreign terrain of medicine and fewer still understand all the issues and elements of making critical medical decisions.

If you know what’s coming you can get better prepared, make wiser decisions, suffer less anxiety and enjoy more of life as well as help your doctors help you – and have a better outcome. You have to get involved. It is not an easy path, but it is a better path.

These resources and this talk will walk you from diagnosis to treatment, remission to possible relapse, through the rest of life with cure or without – and beyond. It will teach you how to under stand and engage the medical community, how to relate to family and friends, how to find and cultivate hope – and how to take care of yourself and prosper in spite of cancer.

The Bell Lap [PDF]

Presenter Bio

I have been a medical oncologist for over 30 years. Now retired, I can spend time with cancer patients in our community helping them understand what their doctors have said, what their doctors left out and what it all means. Then I help them make decisions that respect their bodies, their families and the life they want to lead.

Early on I did research on how to control the side effects of cancer chemotherapy and later how to diagnose breast and prostate cancer in the least invasive way then to treat it in a boutique fashion tailored to each patient’s unique cancer and circumstances. For years I worked with national cooperative cancer groups: NSABP, SWOG, and P SOC doing clinical research on the characterization and treatment of different cancers.

I played a leadership role in conceiving, implementing and then directing a community cancer center in Seattle, then a hospice and then a multidisciplinary breast center.

I presently live on an island in Puget Sound where I love taking care of the land and the beach when not sailing, climbing, or playing with one with my kids and sibs. I savor fireside reading with my wife and therapist, Suzanne (she is a Marriage and Family Therapist who practices on me regularly). Together we cherish our blended family of nine children and 22 grandchildren. We have started to run our own bell laps although the cancer bell hasn’t rung for either of us yet.

Overview

Could the causes and cures for many types of cancer be hidden in plain sight, right under our noses – perhaps right on our dinner plates? And is there anything we can do about cancer, or are we genetically destined to be victims?

Author Sarah Taylor will be speaking on the links between diet and cancer – referencing only high quality scientific research – and will explain why your genes don’t necessarily determine your health. You will leave inspired and armed with the knowledge of how you and your loved ones can take your health into your own hands.

Many women experience a variety of symptoms after menopause, whether menopause comes naturally or is induced due to gynecological cancer. These symptoms may be urinary (urgency, frequency, incontinence, pain with urination) and/or sexual in nature (pain with intercourse, vaginal pain, vaginal dryness). There are long-standing surgical and hormonal treatments for these conditions, but new in-office procedures are showing great promise to get patients back to feeling like they did prior to menopause without side effects. Learning why these changes occur and how to deal with them are the first steps in regaining a sense of femininity lost due to cancer.
